Go the extra mile
The Katingan Peatland Restoration and Conservation Project aims to protect and restore 149,800 hectares of peatland in Indonesia to mitigate climate change and benefit local communities. Peatlands are vital for storing carbon and regulating water flows, but they are threatened by deforestation and drainage for agricultural purposes. The Katingan Project will prevent these threats by obtaining legal control of the land and implementing a range of conservation activities. These activities include restoring degraded peatlands, promoting sustainable livelihoods for local communities, and protecting biodiversity. The project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 7,451,846 tons annually over the next 60 years.
