The project is rooted in more than 200,000 hectares of tidal wetlands on the South-East coast of Sindh in Pakistan. This incredibly rich and diverse landscape embodies exceptional potential to help contribute to climate change mitigation through its unique multi-functionality, coupled with the critical ecosystem services it provides.

Project highlights

  • Improved protection from storm surges and other coastal hazards for communities and coastal infrastructure
  • Intertidal wetlands provide a fertile ground for sequestering and storing vast amounts of atmospheric carbon
  • Significant increase in spawning places for fishes, shrimps and other marine life

About

The Delta Blue Carbon project aims to restore and protect 224,997 hectares of mangroves in Pakistan to mitigate climate change and benefit local communities. By doing so, the project will sequester an estimated 142,050,139 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent over 60 years. The project will also improve the resilience of local communities to climate change by providing them with alternative livelihood opportunities and improving their access to essential services. Additionally, Delta Blue will protect biodiversity in the region by restoring degraded coastal habitats and addressing threats to endangered species.
