Number of Goals this project addresses

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development
Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss

Rottal Estate is restoring over 300 hectares of upland peatland and improving rivers, wetlands, and moorland habitats to enhance biodiversity, carbon storage, water quality, and flood resilience through sustainable land management.

Project highlights

  • Landscape-scale peatland restoration: Initiated a 300 ha peatland restoration programme, restoring 30 ha in year one to enhance carbon storage, water regulation, and moorland habitat quality.
  • Catchment and biodiversity impact: Upland land management delivers downstream flood mitigation, improved water quality, and enhanced habitats for salmonids, invertebrates, and ground-nesting birds.
  • Sustainable, diversified estate model: Nature restoration underpins all activities, supported by renewable energy, farming, tourism, and low-impact sporting enterprises, with a commitment to net biodiversity gain.

About

Under the Woodland Carbon Code (WCC) a carbon credit is represented in two parts; a Woodland Carbon Unit (WCU) and a Pending Issuance Unit (PIU). A WCU represents a tonne of CO₂e that has been sequestered in a WCC-verified woodland. A PIU is the ‘promise to deliver’ a WCU in the future, issued in full at project implementation to fund the project and land costs. PIUs convert to WCUs as the trees mature and sequester carbon.

This project is a PIU, meaning that planting is new and ongoing. Only when this woodland matures will a WCU be issued and subsequently retired. Because this PIU does not represent an offset happening right now, this project has been further backed by an international Verified Carbon Standard carbon credit, representing current and actual carbon reductions or avoidance. This means that you can confidently say you have offset your carbon emissions while also supporting the creation of woodlands in the UK for future carbon sequestration.

For every tonne of woodland PIU purchased, CarbonClick has subsequently purchased and retired the equivalent amount of credits from a wind farm in India. You can find the details of the project here, and the corresponding retirement certificate here. All WCU’s delivered in the future will also be retired, so we have the upmost confidence in our credits being impactful, additional and helping create forests that we, and our future generations, will enjoy.
