This reforestation project is re-establishing a 200km long forest corridor in the Western Australian outback, capturing carbon and restoring biodiversity.

Project highlights

  • 200+ jobs created, supporting rural communities and employing indigenous people.
  • Provides birds and animals with habitat for food, nests and protection from predators.
  • 1.059 million tonnes of CO2e will be absorbed by this ecosystem by the time this project is finished.

About

The context
In Western Australia, about 90% of the Yarra Yarra project area was was cleared by European settlers during the 1900s to allow for the farming of crops and livestock. Over time the soil has degraded, and together with a drying climate, has left parts of the landscape no longer viable for traditional farming.

The project
This reforestation project is re-establishing the natural landscape by re-vegetating the 200km Yarra Yarra Corridor. This is done by planting up to 60 different tree and shrub species indigenous to the region. The goal is to create a green corridor that will reconnect coastal regions with drier inland habitats.

The benefits:
200+ jobs created, supporting rural communities and employing indigenous people. The Corridor will provide birds and animals with a habitat for food, nests and protection from predators, encouraging them to transition through the landscape. 1.059 million tonnes of CO2e will be sequestered by this project, directly fighting climate change.
