Number of Goals this project addresses

Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development
Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss

The project enables a shift from intensive timber harvesting toward long-term sustainable forest management by leveraging carbon revenues. This approach preserves forest carbon stocks, supports biodiversity such as bald eagle habitats, and ensures ecological and economic resilience for the future.

Project highlights

  • The project provides important ecological benefits, including the preservation of bald eagle nesting sites and shoreline habitats, supporting both biodiversity and climate resilience
  • By generating carbon revenues, it enables the landowner to adopt extended harvest rotations and long-lived wood product strategies, reducing carbon emissions compared to pulp-driven, short-rotation forestry.
  • The project conserves 36,634 acres of northern hardwood and softwood forest in Maine, helping to ensure long-term sustainable forestry practices in a region under pressure from intensive timber harvesting.

About

The Anew – Tomah Highlands Forestry Project spans 36,634 acres of northern hardwood and softwood forest in Maine and is managed by Baskahegan Company, a century-old leader in sustainable forestry. Facing economic pressures that historically forced higher timber harvests, Baskahegan Co. has used carbon revenues to adopt extended rotation cycles and maintain high forest carbon stocks, providing a financially viable alternative to intensive pulp-focused management. This approach allows the company to produce long-lived, high-value wood products while preserving forest health for the long term. The project also delivers significant biodiversity benefits, protecting critical habitat for bald eagles and other wildlife by reducing harvesting intensity and safeguarding nesting sites. Tomah Highlands demonstrates how carbon finance can enable climate-conscious, ecologically sustainable forest management, balancing carbon sequestration, economic resilience, and conservation outcomes.
